Data Flakes

Back

If you logged into Snowflake this morning, you might have done a double-take. The “New Snowsight” UI has rolled out effectively replacing the Classic Console and the v1 Snowsight.

It’s cleaner, faster, and surprisingly helpful.

CMD+K (or Ctrl+K) is your new superpower. The search bar at the top is AI-powered.

  • “Show me tables with email addresses” -> Finds tables based on schema/data profiling.
  • “Failed tasks last night” -> Jumps to Task History filtered by error status.

Enhanced Worksheets#

The SQL editor has grown up.

  • Intellisense: Much faster autocomplete.
  • Format Query: A built-in prettifier that actually handles CTEs correctly.
  • Version History: You can rollback a worksheet to the version from 20 minutes ago.

The Data Graph#

The database object explorer now has a “Graph View”. You can visually see the relationships between tables (Foreign Keys) and lineage (Pipe -> Table -> View). This is invaluable for understanding impact analysis before making changes.

Dashboards on Steroids#

Snowsight Dashboards were previously a bit basic. The update brings:

  • Cross-filtering: Clicking a bar in one chart filters the data in other charts (like Power BI).
  • Parameters: Dropdowns at the top of the dashboard that inject values into all underlying SQL queries.

Conclusion#

The GUI is no longer just a place to type SQL. It’s an observability platform and a lightweight BI tool. If you are still clinging to the Classic Console URL… it’s time to let go.
